1. Where should I put the crate when we first bring our puppy home?
Put the crate as near to your bed as possible at least for the first week. This will help the puppy to feel more comfortable and hopefully sleep through the night. We also suggest using a crate pad or blanket.
2. How often should my puppy go outside?
Every 2-3 hours for the first 2 weeks, even at night. If you make it through these first 2 weeks without an accident in the crate or your house, your house breaking period will be shorter and easier.
3. Should I have water or food in the crate with the dog at night or when I'm away?
No. Having food and/or water in the crate will only make the house breaking period more difficult. You should also remove the water from the puppy at 7pm to help with house breaking during the evening hours.
4. Should I reward the dog after the dog has gone to the bathroom outside?
Absolutely the second the dog has finished its business outside, you should make sure you have a treat ready to give to the dog. Always use lots of positive reinforcement and praise as well as giving a treat when the dog has done what you want it to do. Never wait until you get back to in the house as the dog will have forgotten why it is being rewarded.
5. How long does crate training last?
Crate training usually takes 6-12 months. Crate training is not only for house breaking but also to make sure that your furniture isn't being destroyed while you are away from the house.
6. What should I do for teething and chewing?
Have at least 4-5 chew treats or toys around at all times. We recommend using natural bones, bully sticks, deer antlers and hard toys. Rawhide should be avoided until the puppy is at least 6 months old as it is not digestible and large pieces can become lodged in the puppy's intestines. If the puppy begins to chew furniture we recommend using a product called Bitter Apple as a taste deterrent. This chewing period will typically last 6-12 months.
7. When and how often should I feed my dog?
We recommend feeding the dog twice a day at breakfast and dinner.
8. At what age should I have my puppy spayed/neutered?
These procedures are typically done when the dog is 6 months old.
9. I'm having trouble with unwanted barking, biting, aggression, jumping up, etc.
